In the summer of 1989 the Cummings family struck culinary gold discovering the virtues of the time honoured artisan sourdough techniques in the French Alps and later in the Pacific north west of the America’s.
“We knew the Australian palate would fall in love with these beautiful sourdough breads” so the Bowan Island story was born.
Pioneering artisan sourdough baking in Australia over 25 years ago, Bowan Island Bakery continues to produce their delicious artisan breads for all to enjoy.
Today Bowan Island Bakery nourishes its sourdough breads with their unique 80 year old starter, creating our Artisan Sourdough Collection.

Each Café expresses the relaxed atmosphere & friendly service that creates the Bowan Island experience. Each individual location influencing each Café’s Character with the Bowan Island produce incorporated into the various dishes on the menu, while also available in retail to take home, share & enjoy. Bowan Island also serves up its very own signature coffee blend, this is a must.
